Nevada has no veteran business preference (2026)
Nevada has no state-level certification, procurement preference or set-aside for veteran-owned businesses. This is a confirmed absence, not a page we ran out of time on — we checked the statute that would have created one and established it is not in the code. Most sites cannot tell the difference between a benefit that does not exist and one they failed to find, which is why so many of them list a Nevada programme anyway.
Nevada does not waive its State Business Licence fee for veterans. You will read that it does — with figures, a bill number, and a five-year renewal waiver attached — on aggregators, bill trackers and AI answer engines. It is the single most confidently repeated false veteran business benefit we have found in any state. The Secretary of State enumerates every exemption to that fee on its own page, and there is no veteran exemption on the list.

What we checked, and what we found
The claim is that Nevada waives the State Business Licence fee for veteran-owned businesses under AB306 (2023) — usually quoted as $500 for corporations and $200 for everyone else, waived for five years. AB306 was a bill. It did not become law in that form, and no veteran exemption exists anywhere in the statute that governs the licence. This matters more in Nevada than in most states because the fee is annual rather than one-off: a Nevada corporation pays $500 for the licence every year it operates, and a veteran-owned one pays exactly the same as everyone else.
- NRS Chapter 76 — the entire chapter governing the Nevada State Business Licence, including § 76.100 (fee) and § 76.105 (claim for exemption) — contains the word "veteran" zero times. Not in the exemptions, not in the definitions, not anywhere.
- The Secretary of State's own State Business Licence Exemption FAQ enumerates every available exemption by number: 002 nonprofit, 003 home-based, 004 four-or-fewer rental dwellings, 005 motion picture, 006 NRS insurance company. There is no veteran exemption and no seventh category.
- AB306 (2023) is a bill. Bill trackers such as trackbill, billtrack50 and legiscan index introduced legislation, and a search summary cannot distinguish an introduced bill from an enacted statute — which is precisely how a bill that never became law acquired specific dollar figures in circulation.
- The fee figures quoted in the false claim are real, which is what makes it convincing: NRS 76.100 does set $200, and $500 for corporations organised under NRS chapters 78, 78A or 78B. Correct numbers attached to a waiver that does not exist.

What to chase instead
Nevada has no state veteran business programme to certify into, so federal certification is the entire game — SBA VetCert for SDVOSB/VOSB status governs federal set-asides regardless of your state. On the state side, spend your attention on the exemptions that DO exist: the 003 home-based business exemption is the one most likely to apply to a veteran starting out of a spare room, and it removes the licence fee entirely on grounds that have nothing to do with your service. Read the Secretary of State's exemption FAQ against your actual setup before paying, and budget for the fee as a real annual cost rather than something you expect to get waived.
What to do next
With no state programme to certify into, federal certification is the whole game here. Start with whether you actually qualify as an SDVOSB — that determination is identical in every state and is what unlocks real set-aside dollars.

Questions people actually ask
Does Nevada have a veteran-owned business certification?
No. Nevada runs no state-level veteran-owned business certification. Private companies sell certificates using the state's name; none of them are issued or recognised by Nevada, and none grant access to a state programme, because there is no state programme. Confirmed 2026-08-12.
Does Nevada give veteran-owned businesses a contracting preference or set-aside?
No. The claim is that Nevada waives the State Business Licence fee for veteran-owned businesses under AB306 (2023) — usually quoted as $500 for corporations and $200 for everyone else, waived for five years. This matters more in Nevada than in most states because the fee is annual rather than one-off: a Nevada corporation pays $500 for the licence every year it operates, and a veteran-owned one pays exactly the same as everyone else.
So what should a veteran business owner in Nevada do instead?
