Best Military Jobs for Families
The jobs where "military family" doesn't have to mean "absent parent" — stability, hours, and locations that work.
Air Force medical at a fixed facility. Regular hours, minimal deployments, and Air Force bases generally have the best family support infrastructure (schools, childcare, housing).
Coast Guard IT at a shore unit. The CG deploys less than any other branch, IT is mostly shore-based, and CG bases are often in desirable locations (coastal cities).
HR at a garrison unit. Predictable hours, low deployment rate, and HR billets exist at every installation — meaning more control over PCS assignments.
Financial Management. Desk work, regular hours, and finance offices exist at every base. The Air Force family support system (childcare, spouse employment) is the best in the DoD.
Yeoman at a shore command. Sea/shore rotation means guaranteed shore duty periods. During shore duty, it's a regular 9-5 admin job. Plan your family milestones around shore rotations.
HVAC at a permanent base. Civil engineering MOSs at fixed installations have regular hours and the work doesn't follow you home. The trade skills also make side income possible.
Patient Administration at a military hospital. Hospital billets mean regular hours at a fixed location. Medical assignments tend to be at larger installations with better family infrastructure.
Based on deployment frequency, schedule predictability, PCS stability, and duty station quality reports from families. Prioritizes jobs with shore/garrison assignments.
