Caribbean Interdiction With Mofongo Breaks

Sector San Juan covers the Caribbean from Puerto Rico, which means you're running drug interdiction, migrant ops, and hurricane response from an island with bioluminescent bays (Mosquito Bay will make you question reality), Old San Juan's candy-colored colonial streets (founded 1521, older than your entire branch's history), and mofongo that hits harder than any pre-workout ever formulated by science. The COLA is real, the location is objectively absurd, and the mission is as serious as it gets — the Caribbean corridor is a major drug transit zone and hurricane season turns the entire AOR into a SAR marathon. You'll respond to Category 4 storms and then eat alcapurrias on the beach the following weekend like nothing happened. The lechón roasts are a weekend religion. The rum is local, cheap, and dangerous. El Yunque Rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and it's 30 minutes from base. Rincón has surf breaks that belong in magazines. When other branches ask where you're stationed and you say 'Puerto Rico,' just let the silence do the work — their face will cycle through confusion, jealousy, and existential crisis in about four seconds.

HousingNo government housing. San Juan rent moderate by mainland standards: $1,200-$1,800 for 2BR in Condado, Isla Verde, Santurce. Guaynabo and Bayamon suburbs $900-$1,400. BAH decent, goes further than most coastal assignments. Electricity among most expensive in US. Look for places with generators — outages happen.
SchoolsPR public schools Spanish-language instruction — major consideration for English-speaking families. Many military families choose bilingual private or English-language schools ($400-$800/month). Robinson School popular. No DoDEA currently. Homeschooling common among CG families.
MedicalSmall CG clinic for routine care. Fort Buchanan Army clinic (20 min). VA Caribbean Healthcare in San Juan. Civilian: Centro Medico, Auxilio Mutuo, Hospital Pavia. Specialist availability more limited — some families travel to mainland for complex needs.
Spouse EmploymentLimited professional market. Tourism, healthcare, federal government main employers. Bilingual English/Spanish almost required locally. Remote work for mainland companies strongest option — AST time zone aligns with East Coast. Some teach at English-language private schools.
Commute / GatesCG Sector at port — no heavy gate, waterfront access. San Juan metro traffic congested on Route 22 and 18. PR roads functional but potholes, flooding, aggressive driving realities. Air Station Borinquen on west coast (Aguadilla) — 2.5 hrs, separate assignment.
Local AreaSan Juan is vibrant Caribbean city — Old San Juan one of most beautiful historic districts in Western Hemisphere, 500-year-old forts, colorful architecture. Food incredible: mofongo, lechon, fresh seafood, local coffee. Beaches world-class. Challenges real: power grid instability, infrastructure gaps, hurricane risk yearly. CG mission critical — drug interdiction, migrant rescue, maritime safety for US territory. Genuinely unique: US soil, Caribbean culture, no passport needed.
RecreationOld San Juan and El Morro fortress · El Yunque National Forest hiking · Bioluminescent bays kayaking (Vieques/Fajardo) · Condado Beach and Isla Verde surfing · Culebra Island day trips (Flamenco Beach)
