Suggest a Feature →RAF Mildenhall — Suffolk, England
USAF mobility and special operations in the English countryside.
Royal Air Force Mildenhall is a US Air Force installation adjacent to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, hosting mobility and special operations aircraft including tankers, intelligence platforms, and special mission aircraft. The base community is closely integrated with the larger Lakenheath community — the two installations share many facilities, events, and social infrastructure.
The surrounding area is identical to Lakenheath's — rural East Anglia with Cambridge 30 miles south, the Suffolk coast 40 miles east, and London accessible by train. The Mildenhall community tends to be somewhat smaller and less fighter-pilot-centric than Lakenheath, which can be a feature depending on your preference for the social environment.
Everything said about the Lakenheath region applies equally to Mildenhall. Cambridge, Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Sutton Hoo, the Norfolk Broads, and the Suffolk coast are all equally accessible. European travel from Stansted is the same logistical advantage.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
Bury St Edmunds Market Town
"The nearest proper market town. Wednesday and Saturday markets."
Bury St Edmunds (10 minutes west) has a beautifully preserved Norman and Georgian town center, the ruins of an abbey, the Greene King Brewery, and a Wednesday and Saturday market. It's the social and commercial center for both Lakenheath and Mildenhall communities.
The Angel Hotel in Bury dates to 1452 and has excellent food. Charles Dickens stayed here repeatedly — his writing room is maintained.
The Crown (Southwold)
"Adnams flagship pub and hotel in Britain's most charming seaside town."
The Adnams brewery pub and hotel on Southwold's high street does the full Suffolk experience — fresh fish, local beer from the adjacent brewery, and a dining room that takes the food as seriously as the ale.
Southwold is 45 minutes east. Come for a long weekend or at minimum a full day — the beach huts, pier, and brewery tour justify it.
Cambridge Restaurants (various)
"University city 30 minutes south has a disproportionately good food scene."
Cambridge punches above its size for restaurants — Cotto, Alimentum, and The Pint Shop are consistent high-quality options. The Mill Pond area has good casual options for post-punting food.
Book any Cambridge restaurant for Saturday evening 2-3 weeks out — the university calendar drives weekend demand significantly.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Thetford Forest Cycling
"High Lodge has the best purpose-built mountain bike trails in East Anglia."
The forest trails at High Lodge include blue, red, and black mountain bike routes through the pines. Bike rental available at the center. Good for all skill levels.
The black route is legitimately technical by UK forest standards. Beginners on the blue route have an excellent experience without the pressure.
Norfolk Broads (Sailing / Motor Cruising)
"45 minutes north. Hire a boat and be British for a weekend."
The Broads hire boat experience — pottering along waterways, mooring at riverside pubs, watching windmills — is genuinely one of the best things to do from a Suffolk base assignment. No experience required.
Wroxham and Potter Heigham are the main hire centers. Watercraft are straightforward to operate — the hire company will train you. Book for a midweek departure for better availability.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
IWM Duxford (shared with Lakenheath)
"The best aviation museum in Europe. American Air Museum included."
The Imperial War Museum at Duxford airfield is the single best aviation museum in Europe — operating warbirds, the American Air Museum with B-52, SR-71, P-51, and the Battle of Britain hall.
Flying Legends airshow in July and the Autumn Air Show in September are the events to plan around. Military discount applies.
100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (Thorpe Abbotts)
"The Bloody Hundredth. WWII bomber group memorial museum."
The 100th Bombardment Group (Heavy) flew B-17s from this Suffolk airfield and suffered extraordinary losses. The memorial museum tells their story on the original site.
The museum is volunteer-run and small. Call ahead to confirm opening. The story of the 100th BG is documented in the book "The Bloody Hundredth."
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Center Parcs Elveden (shared)
"All-weather family resort in Elveden Forest. 15 minutes from Mildenhall."
Center Parcs Elveden Forest is the closest all-weather family resort — subtropical swimming pool, outdoor activities, and lodges in managed forest. Popular with both Lakenheath and Mildenhall families.
Elveden Estate (the country estate surrounding the park) has a farm shop and the Elveden Inn. Worth stopping for a meal if you're driving through.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"Train from Cambridge, Ely, or Bury St Edmunds. 60-90 minutes."
Multiple rail routes to London. Free museums (British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, V&A) make London an excellent value day trip. The Overground and tube connect everything.
"Fly from Stansted in 90 minutes. Castle, whisky, and Arthur's Seat."
Budget flights from Stansted to Edinburgh make Scotland accessible for a weekend. Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat hike, and Scotch whisky distillery tours.
"Stansted to Amsterdam Schiphol. 55 minutes. Rijksmuseum and canals."
Budget European flights from Stansted make Amsterdam one of the easiest international weekend trips from Suffolk.
Everything in the Lakenheath insider tips section applies equally to Mildenhall. The two communities share facilities, events, and social infrastructure.
The Mildenhall community tends to have more tanker and special operations families versus the fighter community at Lakenheath. Different deployment rhythms and different community dynamics.
Stansted airport budget flights are the great advantage of East Anglia postings. Build a travel budget and use it — Ryanair and easyJet connect to most of Europe from Stansted.
Suffolk has excellent road cycling infrastructure by UK standards. A good road bike opens up the villages, coast, and countryside in a way a car can't match.
RAF Mildenhall's future has been uncertain due to congressional budget discussions about consolidating UK bases. Verify the current operational status of the installation before making long-term commitments based on the assignment.
