NSA Crane
NSA Crane is the third-largest naval installation in the world by geographic area and almost nobody on the coasts knows it exists — 98 square miles of southern Indiana hardwood forest in Martin County, midway between Bedford and Vincennes, where the Navy quietly builds, tests, and stores some of the most operationally consequential gear in the fleet. NSWC Crane is the headline tenant — special mission equipment, electronic warfare, and strategic missions are the publicly-acknowledged portfolios, and 'special mission equipment' is the polite way of saying things you would not want to read about in the unclassified press release. Crane Army Ammunition Activity is the co-located Army tenant — munitions production and demilitarization at industrial scale. The workforce is structurally civilian: roughly 3,300+ DoD engineers and scientists at NSWC Crane against perhaps 50 uniformed sailors and Marines. If you arrive expecting Norfolk or San Diego, you will be confused; if you arrive expecting Wright-Patterson with worse airline service, you will be closer to the mark. Bedford is 25 minutes east — limestone-quarry country, the stone for the Empire State Building came out of these hills. Bloomington is 45 minutes northeast — IU college town, decent restaurants, a real airport ride. Indianapolis is two hours up. Indiana has a flat 3% income tax and fully exempts active-duty military pay under the Military Service Deduction, which makes IN SLR genuinely competitive for the IN-domiciled. BAH at IN399 (Bloomington MHA) covers the local rents with room to spare. Winter is cold, gray, and ice-prone. The lifestyle is Hoosier National Forest, Lake Monroe, deer season, and the slow rhythm of small-town southern Indiana. For the right career field, Crane is a structurally distinctive assignment. For everyone else, it is a culture shock.
- +Very low cost of living in a rural Hoosier setting
- +Civilian-leaning workday rhythm — minimal deployment tempo for permanent party
- +Massive secured land area with hunting, fishing, and outdoor rec
- +Strong career capital for Navy civilian S&T and engineering workforce
- −Genuinely rural — Bedford is the nearest real town, Bloomington is 45 min
- −Cold, gray Indiana winters with ice events
- −Limited spouse-employment market outside of NSWC Crane contractor ecosystem
- −No commercial airport closer than Indianapolis (2 hrs)
