The San Joaquin Valley. Strike fighter country in the agricultural heart of California.
NAS Lemoore sits in the San Joaquin Valley, 40 miles south of Fresno — the center of California's agricultural empire. Lemoore is the Navy's largest master jet base, home to F/A-18 Super Hornets and F-35C Lightning IIs.
The local area is limited: Lemoore is a small city of 25,000, and the Valley itself can feel flat and featureless to newcomers. But the geography is deceptive — within 90 minutes in any direction are some of the greatest landscapes in the country: Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, the Pacific coast.
Fresno (40 miles north) is the service center with real restaurants, entertainment, and shopping. But the outdoor access from this assignment is extraordinary for those willing to make the drive.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
Trelio (Fresno)
"Fresno's most acclaimed restaurant. Farm-to-table from the most productive farmland on earth."
Trelio has become one of the most celebrated restaurants in the Central Valley — using San Joaquin Valley produce, local proteins, and a wine list that features California's finest. Reservation required.
Chicken Pie Shop (Fresno)
"Fresno institution since 1938. Comfort food and nostalgia."
The Chicken Pie Shop has been feeding Fresno since 1938 — pot pies, comfort food, and milkshakes in a time-capsule diner. The kind of place that exists nowhere else.
Taqueria El Jaripeo (Lemoore)
"Best local Mexican food near the base."
The San Joaquin Valley has an extraordinary Mexican food tradition driven by a large agricultural labor force — El Jaripeo serves authentic Mexican in Lemoore itself with excellent carnitas and weekend birria.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Sequoia National Park
"The largest trees on Earth. 90 minutes east."
General Sherman Tree — the largest living tree on Earth by volume — is in Sequoia NP, 90 minutes from Lemoore. The Giant Forest is one of the most awe-inspiring places in the US. Go in spring for wildflowers or fall for golden color.
Yosemite National Park
"The most spectacular valley in the world. 2 hours northeast."
Yosemite Valley is 2 hours from Lemoore — one of the crown jewels of the national park system. El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall, and Yosemite Falls in a granite valley of staggering beauty. Book vehicle reservations well in advance.
Yosemite Valley vehicle reservations (required May-September) book months in advance on recreation.gov. Plan before your assignment begins.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
Fresno State Athletics
"Mountain West football and basketball. Bulldog country."
Fresno State has a passionate fan base and a history of fielding competitive football and basketball teams. Home games at Valley Children's Stadium provide excellent affordable entertainment.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Fresno Chaffee Zoo
"Mid-sized zoo with a strong Africa exhibit. Military discount."
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo has been significantly expanded in recent years — the African Adventure exhibit with giraffes and rhinos is particularly strong. Military discount available.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"The most spectacular mountain valley in America."
Yosemite Valley in any season is transformative. Book reservations. Go multiple times throughout your assignment — it's different in every season.
"Central California coast. Sea otters and Hearst Castle."
Morro Bay is 1.5 hours west — sea otters in the estuary, Morro Rock, excellent seafood, and Hearst Castle nearby. The Central Coast from Cambria to San Simeon is one of California's most beautiful stretches.
"Sierra skiing, volcanic lakes, and hot springs."
Mammoth Mountain is one of the premier ski resorts in the country — often skiing into June. Hot Creek geological site and the Devils Postpile are nearby geological wonders.
The Valley fog (Tule fog) in December and January is a genuine safety hazard — it can drop visibility to near zero in minutes. Slow down dramatically or stop.
Yosemite vehicle reservations book months in advance. Set a calendar reminder the day your assignment is confirmed.
The San Joaquin Valley produces 40% of US produce. Farmstand fruit and vegetables here are extraordinary — especially summer stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, plums).
Kings Canyon is significantly less crowded than Yosemite with comparable scenery in different ways. Go there when Yosemite is impossible to book.
Lemoore city itself is genuinely limited. Fresno is the functional city and it's 40 miles away. The Valley is flat, agricultural, and hot. The air quality is poor — the San Joaquin Valley has some of the worst air quality in the US due to geography and agriculture. For outdoor enthusiasts with a car and the willingness to drive, the access to Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and the Sierras makes this an excellent assignment. For everyone else, it requires tolerance.
