MCAS Futenma
MCAS Futenma is the most geographically and politically distinctive airfield in the Marine Corps — a runway in the middle of Ginowan City with no buffer zone, dense urban Ginowan completely surrounding the perimeter, and a decades-long bilateral conversation about its future built into the institutional context of every tour. The 1996 SACO agreement committed both governments to closing Futenma and relocating its capabilities; the Futenma Replacement Facility (FRF) at Camp Schwab / Henoko has been under construction with repeated timeline slips ever since. Treat the relocation as a real but not-near-term bilateral process and plan your tour like the airfield is operating, because it is. The Marine Corps actually here: Marine Aircraft Group 36 — VMM-262 Flying Tigers and VMM-265 Dragons flying MV-22B Ospreys, HMH-462 Heavy Haulers with CH-53E Super Stallions, AH-1Z and UH-1Y light attack and utility rotations, KC-130J detachment support, and the MALS-36 and MWSS-172 sustainment infrastructure that keeps the whole MAG running. If you are an aviation Marine, MAG-36 is one of the most career-distinguishing rotary/tiltrotor assignments in the inventory. The quality-of-life situation is better than the city-airfield geography suggests, because Futenma is 10 minutes from Camp Foster — USNHO, DoDEA Pacific schools, the big MCX, the commissary, and the Chatan Seawall sunset bar scene are all in immediate range. The political sensitivity is real and it shapes off-base liberty conduct in ways the briefings will explain on day one. The Ospreys don't sleep. Neither does Ginowan. The diving is world-class. The ramen is better than the briefings.
