FE Warren AFB
F.E. Warren is the oldest continuously active military installation in the Air Force — established 1867, when Wyoming was still a territory and the concept of 'ICBMs' was 90 years away — which means the historic red brick housing is genuinely beautiful (some quarters are Victorian mansions with wrap-around porches) and the plumbing is a coin flip that you'll lose at least once during your tour. Missileers drive hours across the Wyoming prairie in government vehicles to sit underground in a launch control center and hope the phone never rings with the call that would change human history. Cheyenne has Frontier Days (the 'Daddy of 'Em All' — one of the largest outdoor rodeos in the world), easy access to Colorado (Fort Collins is 45 minutes south with craft beer and CSU energy), and wind that treats stop signs as suggestions, parked cars as toys, and your hat as a frisbee. You will hear 'well, Denver is only 90 minutes away' so often it becomes your mantra, your therapy, and your sole justification for living in Wyoming. The cost of living is low. The wind is high. The mission is existential.
