FE Warren AFB

Air ForceWY, US
Guarding Nukes in Wyoming's Wind Tunnel Since 1867

F.E. Warren is the oldest continuously active military installation in the Air Force — established 1867, when Wyoming was still a territory and the concept of 'ICBMs' was 90 years away — which means the historic red brick housing is genuinely beautiful (some quarters are Victorian mansions with wrap-around porches) and the plumbing is a coin flip that you'll lose at least once during your tour. Missileers drive hours across the Wyoming prairie in government vehicles to sit underground in a launch control center and hope the phone never rings with the call that would change human history. Cheyenne has Frontier Days (the 'Daddy of 'Em All' — one of the largest outdoor rodeos in the world), easy access to Colorado (Fort Collins is 45 minutes south with craft beer and CSU energy), and wind that treats stop signs as suggestions, parked cars as toys, and your hat as a frisbee. You will hear 'well, Denver is only 90 minutes away' so often it becomes your mantra, your therapy, and your sole justification for living in Wyoming. The cost of living is low. The wind is high. The mission is existential.

MedicalFE Warren AFB Clinic (90th Medical Group) — clinic only. Cheyenne Regional Medical Center handles civilian needs. Denver (1.5 hrs) for complex or specialized care.
Spouse EmploymentLimited in Cheyenne. State government is the largest employer. Healthcare and education available. No income tax is a financial win. Remote work is common. Some spouses commute to the Fort Collins/Loveland, CO area.
Commute / GatesMain gate off Randall Avenue — minimal delays. Cheyenne is small. Missile alert facilities are spread across the Wyoming/Nebraska/Colorado tristate area — alert duty drives are long and lonely.
Local AreaCheyenne is a small Western city with cowboy heritage. Frontier Days in July is the highlight of the year — rodeo, concerts, and the whole town celebrates. Denver is 1.5 hours south for real city amenities — concerts, sports, restaurants. No state income tax makes this financially attractive. The wind is relentless and the winters are cold, but the sunsets over the high plains are stunning. The Sentinel ICBM modernization program is bringing billions in investment to the missile wing.
