Ellsworth is a B-1B Lancer base near Rapid City, South Dakota, where the Badlands look like Mars decided to open a national park and Mount Rushmore is your casual weekend trip that makes everyone you know from home jealous. The BONE community is tight-knit and loud — both the people and the afterburners, which shake windows in Rapid City and remind the locals that freedom has a decibel rating. Sturgis Rally takes over every August: suddenly your quiet, family-friendly town has 500,000 motorcycles, leather as far as the eye can see, and a vibe that makes Spring Break look Presbyterian. The winters will rearrange your understanding of cold — wind chill warnings here aren't news, they're just the forecast from October to April, and the phrase 'but it's a dry cold' is a lie South Dakota tells to keep people from evacuating. The Black Hills in summer almost make up for it: Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Sylvan Lake, and trails that look like screensavers. Rapid City is a legit small city with breweries, restaurants, and people who are aggressively friendly in a way that takes East Coasters about six months to trust. The B-1 mission is global power projection from the prairie, and there's something poetic about that.
