Suggest a Feature →Cavalier & the Red River Valley
The northern edge of the prairie. Space surveillance and serious winters.
Cavalier Space Force Station in northeastern North Dakota operates the Cavalier Space Surveillance Complex — phased-array radar providing critical missile warning and space surveillance data for national defense. It is one of the most operationally significant and geographically remote installations in the Space Force.
Cavalier is a small city of about 1,300 in the Red River Valley, 15 miles south of the Canadian border. The surrounding region is the quintessential northern Great Plains: flat, agricultural, and spare. The prairies are not dramatic in the Grand Canyon sense, but they have a scale and light quality that people who come to appreciate the plains find genuinely moving.
This is a genuine hardship assignment for people who need urban amenities or extended family nearby. Grand Forks, 80 miles south, is the nearest city. Winters in northeastern North Dakota are severe and long.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
Local bars and supper clubs
"The North Dakota supper club tradition. Where community happens."
The supper club is the dominant dining institution of the Northern Plains — a sit-down restaurant with a full bar, generous portions, and the kind of Friday night fish fry or prime rib special that has served as community anchor for generations. Cavalier's local options are modest; Grand Forks has more variety.
Grand Forks dining (80 miles)
"Grand Forks has a genuine restaurant scene for a city its size."
The University of North Dakota presence gives Grand Forks a dining scene that punches above its weight. Sanders 1907 has been a Grand Forks institution since the early 20th century. The Empire Arts Center area has newer restaurant development. Plan Grand Forks trips for more complex meals.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Prairie Birding
◈ Rare"One of the great birding regions in North America. Bobolinks and Sprague's pipits."
The northern Great Plains is a globally important grassland bird stronghold — species that are becoming rare elsewhere (Baird's sparrow, Sprague's pipit, bobolink, marbled godwit, upland sandpiper) are still common on intact prairie. The Cavalier area has multiple Important Bird Areas.
Lake Metigoshe State Park
"Lakes and forest on the Canadian border. The "Prairie Oasis.""
In the Turtle Mountain region near Bottineau (90 miles west), Lake Metigoshe State Park has clear lakes, boreal forest, and summer cabins in a landscape entirely unlike the surrounding prairie. Swimming, fishing, and the best canoeing in the region.
Winter Snowmobiling
"The prairie in winter is snowmobile country. Hundreds of miles of trails."
The Turtle Mountain region and the Pembina Gorge area have extensive groomed snowmobile trail networks. Rental equipment is available in the region. For people who embrace winter rather than endure it, snowmobiling the northern prairie is one of the genuine pleasures of this assignment.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
University of North Dakota (Grand Forks)
"A Big Sky Conference university with excellent arts programming."
UND in Grand Forks has a strong arts program, the Chester Fritz Auditorium for touring performances, and Division I hockey that is a serious community event. The Fighting Hawks hockey games at the Ralph Engelstad Arena are among the best college hockey atmospheres in the country.
Icelandic Heritage Museum (Gimli, Manitoba)
"The New Iceland heritage site. Cross the border for a unique cultural experience."
Gimli, Manitoba (the "New Iceland" settlement across the Canadian border, 90 minutes north) has the New Iceland Heritage Museum documenting the Icelandic settlement of Manitoba and North Dakota. The annual Icelandic Festival in August draws visitors from across North America.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Bonanzaville Pioneer Village (West Fargo)
"45 buildings from North Dakota's pioneer era. Living history."
In West Fargo (150 miles south), Bonanzaville is a reconstructed pioneer village with 45 historic buildings — one-room schoolhouses, a general store, a church, and farm equipment from the bonanza farming era. A genuine living history museum.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"The nearest city. Essential every few weeks."
The nearest city with full amenities — Costco, medical facilities, restaurants, and cultural events. Plan Grand Forks trips for supply runs, dining, and the UND events that make the assignment more sustainable.
"A Canadian city of 800,000. Cross the border for a real urban experience."
The largest city in Manitoba, Winnipeg is 100 miles north of the Canadian border. A passport is required. The Forks National Historic Site, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (one of the great Canadian museums), and a genuine city restaurant scene make it a worthwhile overnight trip.
Prepare for genuine winter. Temperatures of -40°F (with windchill) are possible. A quality parka, insulated boots, and an engine block heater for your vehicle are not optional.
The assignment community at Cavalier SFS is small and tight-knit. The community that forms in remote postings like this is often the most meaningful of a career.
Embrace the prairie. The northern Great Plains in summer — vast grasslands, enormous skies, the particular quality of light at latitude 48° — is a landscape that rewards those who engage with it honestly.
Cavalier is one of the most remote and isolated postings in the Space Force. The nearest city of any size is 80 miles away. Winters are brutal and long. The social and entertainment options on site and in town are minimal. This assignment tests people who need external stimulation and community variety. Those who can find satisfaction in the mission, the landscape, and the small community they form here sometimes describe it as a formative assignment.
