Suggest a Feature βClovis, New Mexico
High plains mission country. Special operations in the flattest part of New Mexico.
Cannon AFB sits adjacent to Clovis β a city of 40,000 on the eastern New Mexico high plains, 7 miles from the Texas border. Cannon hosts Air Force Special Operations Command units: the 27th SOW with AC-130s, MC-130s, and CV-22 Ospreys.
This is genuinely remote. The flat eastern New Mexico landscape extends in every direction, and Clovis has a limited commercial base. The nearest city with significant amenities is Lubbock, TX (105 miles east) or Albuquerque (225 miles west).
What Cannon has: some of the darkest night skies in the US, genuinely warm military community bonds (because everyone's in the same situation), and Lubbock close enough for regular weekend trips.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
K-Bob's Steakhouse
"New Mexico-Texas chain that anchors small towns across the region."
K-Bob's is everywhere in eastern New Mexico and West Texas for a reason β reliable steaks, salad bar, and the kind of consistent quality that a remote posting makes you appreciate. The chicken fried steak is what this region does best.
El Monterey Restaurant
"New Mexico red and green chile. Different from Tex-Mex."
Eastern New Mexico has its own chile tradition distinct from Texas β New Mexico red and green are milder and earthier. El Monterey does it right with housemade salsas and chile rellenos that use Hatch green chile.
Lubbock restaurant scene (road trip)
"Your real food options are 105 miles east."
Lubbock has a genuine restaurant scene β Evelyn & Olive (new American), CafΓ© J (eclectic), Orlando's (Mexican), and a growing craft beer corridor on Broadway. The drive becomes routine.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Dark Sky Stargazing
β Rare"Some of the darkest night skies in the lower 48. Right outside your door."
Eastern New Mexico has minimal light pollution β the Milky Way is clearly visible on a clear night with the naked eye. Drive 10 miles from Clovis in any direction and you're in Bortle Class 3 or 4 skies. Bring a blanket and just look up.
Mescalero Lake
"On-base fishing lake. Convenient and productive."
Mescalero Lake on Cannon's installation is stocked with catfish, bass, and crappie. Nothing spectacular, but a genuinely convenient escape that military families use regularly β especially with kids.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history β dig in.
Texas Tech Athletics (Lubbock)
"Big 12 football and basketball. 105 miles east."
Texas Tech Red Raiders football at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock is a significant entertainment upgrade for Cannon families who make the drive. The game-day atmosphere in Lubbock is genuine.
Norman Petty Recording Studios
β Rare"Where Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and Buddy Knox recorded. In Clovis."
Norman Petty's studio at 1313 W. 7th Street in Clovis is where Buddy Holly recorded "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day" β alongside Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, and other early rock artists. Tours available by appointment.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Clovis Sports Complex
"Local sports and recreation center."
The city recreation complex has pools, courts, and fields that military families use heavily. It's a quality-of-life anchor in a town with limited commercial entertainment options.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"Chambers the size of stadiums. The bat flight at sunset."
Make the 2.5-hour drive and spend a full day β morning in the caverns (elevator to the Big Room or the natural entrance trail) and evening at the amphitheater watching 400,000 bats spiral out at sunset. Genuinely spectacular.
"Forty miles of pure white gypsum dunes. Alien landscape."
White Sands is unlike anything else on Earth β 275 square miles of gleaming white gypsum dunes that you can sled, hike, and camp in. Sunset at White Sands is one of the great photography opportunities in the National Park system.
"Art, history, and the best New Mexican food in the world."
Santa Fe is a 3.5-hour drive northwest β adobe architecture, Plaza history, Canyon Road galleries, and red and green chile on everything. One of America's most distinctive cities.
Community bonds at Cannon are strong specifically because the town has so little. Everyone is in the same situation and the base social infrastructure matters more here than anywhere.
Lubbock is your de facto city. 105 miles each way becomes routine. Budget gas money accordingly.
The dark skies here are legitimate β get a star chart app and use them. Cannon is one of the best dark sky locations at any military installation.
Norman Petty Studio tours are by appointment. Call ahead β it's one of the most historically significant music sites in America and almost nobody knows it's in Clovis.
Carlsbad Caverns bat flight is at sunset and changes time daily. Check recreation.gov for the current schedule.
Cannon is genuinely isolated. There is almost nothing in Clovis beyond fast food chains and basic retail. The drive to Lubbock (105 miles) or Albuquerque (225 miles) is not optional β you will be making it regularly. Troops who can't find contentment within the base community and the beauty of the high desert landscape will struggle. The assignment rewards people who can make their own entertainment.
