Eastern New Mexico has minimal light pollution — the Milky Way is clearly visible on a clear night with the naked eye. Drive 10 miles from Clovis in any direction and you're in Bortle Class 3 or 4 skies. Bring a blanket and just look up.

Mescalero Lake on Cannon's installation is stocked with catfish, bass, and crappie. Nothing spectacular, but a genuinely convenient escape that military families use regularly — especially with kids.

Norman Petty's studio at 1313 W. 7th Street in Clovis is where Buddy Holly recorded "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day" — alongside Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, and other early rock artists. Tours available by appointment.
