Cannon AFB sits adjacent to Clovis β€” a city of 40,000 on the eastern New Mexico high plains, 7 miles from the Texas border. Cannon hosts Air Force Special Operations Command units: the 27th SOW with AC-130s, MC-130s, and CV-22 Ospreys.

This is genuinely remote. The flat eastern New Mexico landscape extends in every direction, and Clovis has a limited commercial base. The nearest city with significant amenities is Lubbock, TX (105 miles east) or Albuquerque (225 miles west).

What Cannon has: some of the darkest night skies in the US, genuinely warm military community bonds (because everyone's in the same situation), and Lubbock close enough for regular weekend trips.

The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.

K-Bob's Steakhouse

Steakhouse
$$

"New Mexico-Texas chain that anchors small towns across the region."

K-Bob's is everywhere in eastern New Mexico and West Texas for a reason β€” reliable steaks, salad bar, and the kind of consistent quality that a remote posting makes you appreciate. The chicken fried steak is what this region does best.

El Monterey Restaurant

$

"New Mexico red and green chile. Different from Tex-Mex."

Eastern New Mexico has its own chile tradition distinct from Texas β€” New Mexico red and green are milder and earthier. El Monterey does it right with housemade salsas and chile rellenos that use Hatch green chile.

"Some of the darkest night skies in the lower 48. Right outside your door."

Eastern New Mexico has minimal light pollution β€” the Milky Way is clearly visible on a clear night with the naked eye. Drive 10 miles from Clovis in any direction and you're in Bortle Class 3 or 4 skies. Bring a blanket and just look up.

Insider Intel
Things only people who've been there know.
01

Community bonds at Cannon are strong specifically because the town has so little. Everyone is in the same situation and the base social infrastructure matters more here than anywhere.

02

Lubbock is your de facto city. 105 miles each way becomes routine. Budget gas money accordingly.

03

The dark skies here are legitimate β€” get a star chart app and use them. Cannon is one of the best dark sky locations at any military installation.

04

Norman Petty Studio tours are by appointment. Call ahead β€” it's one of the most historically significant music sites in America and almost nobody knows it's in Clovis.

05

Carlsbad Caverns bat flight is at sunset and changes time daily. Check recreation.gov for the current schedule.

Honest Warning

Cannon is genuinely isolated. There is almost nothing in Clovis beyond fast food chains and basic retail. The drive to Lubbock (105 miles) or Albuquerque (225 miles) is not optional β€” you will be making it regularly. Troops who can't find contentment within the base community and the beauty of the high desert landscape will struggle. The assignment rewards people who can make their own entertainment.
