B-52s: Older Than Your Commander, Retiring After Your Grandkids

Barksdale is home to the B-52 Stratofortress and Air Force Global Strike Command HQ, where the BUFF has been flying since 1955 and will apparently fly until the heat death of the universe — the aircraft is literally older than every single person flying it, projected to serve until the 2050s, meaning a bomber designed when Eisenhower was president will outlast most current social media platforms. Bossier City has casinos (the Horseshoe and Margaritaville are within blast radius of bad financial decisions), crawfish boils that are a religion from February to June, and a cost of living that lets you stack actual cash. The Shreveport-Bossier metro is what happens when Louisiana and Texas cultures have a baby and name it 'good enough' — Southern food, oil money energy, and a Red River separating two states that can't agree on anything. The humidity wraps around you like a weighted blanket you didn't ask for. BUFF crew dogs are undefeated at bar trivia and can tell you more about 1960s avionics than any museum docent. The Global Strike mission is dead serious — nuclear deterrence isn't a PowerPoint slide here, it's the reason you exist.

Nearest AirportShreveport Regional (SHV) — 15 min. Limited direct flights — Dallas (DFW) 3 hrs is the backup.
HousingPrivatized by Hunt on base with short waitlists. Off-base in Bossier City and Benton is very affordable — $900-$1,200 for a 3BR. Benton and Haughton (north of Bossier) are quieter family communities.
SchoolsNo DoDEA. Bossier Parish Schools are solid — Airline High and Parkway High are well-regarded. Benton and Haughton schools are popular with military families. Caddo Parish (Shreveport) is more uneven.
MedicalBarksdale AFB Clinic (2nd Medical Group) — clinic only. Willis-Knighton and Christus Health in Shreveport handle most civilian needs. Limited specialized care — Dallas for complex cases.
Spouse EmploymentLimited. Shreveport-Bossier economy has struggled. Healthcare, education, and the casinos are the main employers. Remote work is the best path for professional spouses. The base itself is a significant employer.
Commute / GatesMain gate on Barksdale Blvd is the primary entry — minimal delays most days. Shreveport to base across the Red River takes 15-20 min.
Local AreaBossier City is the Air Force side — casinos, chain restaurants, and the Louisiana Boardwalk shopping area. Shreveport across the river has more character but has seen economic decline. The food is excellent — Cajun and Southern cooking. Cost of living is rock-bottom, so you bank money here. Dallas (3 hrs) is the weekend escape for real shopping and entertainment.
