About This Program

Washington State's Cougar Battalion holds the distinction of being WSU's oldest program, operating continuously since 1892, and has produced over 7,000 commissioned lieutenants across more than 130 years — a legacy that gives the program deep alumni networks across Army senior leadership. JBLM is approximately 250 miles west, but Washington's National Guard installations and eastern Washington training areas give the Pullman-based program local field exercise terrain. The Cougar Battalion earned top awards in earlier cycles and maintains a culture that draws on WSU's agricultural and engineering schools for technically competent cadets. Pullman's small-town environment creates a tight cadet cohort where interpersonal relationships between cadets and cadre are closer than at large urban programs. The program serves the Palouse region and draws cadets from Idaho as well as Washington, reflecting the geographic reach of Washington State's student body. Washington Army National Guard commissioning is a frequent pathway, and the program actively supports concurrent ROTC enrollment with ARNG bonus structures.
