Got a wild idea? We build for service members — not the brass, not shareholders. If it's good, it ships.

VMI is a Virginia state institution where every student lives in the historic Barracks and participates in full corps life — there is no civilian track. Room, board, and the corps experience are bundled into the cadet fee structure. Virginia residents carrying a 4-year ROTC scholarship routinely achieve net annual costs below $12,000 for a fully accredited engineering or liberal arts degree.
VMI's regimented barracks environment, honor code, and total immersion in military culture produces officers who arrive at Basic Officer Leader Course already adapted to institutional military life. Cadre and branch assignment officers consistently note VMI graduates' faster ramp-up to full duty performance.
VMI's Army ROTC program has produced more Army generals than any other ROTC program in the country — a distinction that carries real weight in the alumni network and in how cadre approach officer development. Every VMI cadet is enrolled in ROTC for all four years with no civilian population on campus; this is the most academy-like experience available outside West Point, Annapolis, or Colorado Springs. The program produces over 50% commissioning rates, and VMI is one of the few schools that routes cadets into all five service branches. Branch selection reflects the school's combat arms culture — Infantry, Armor, and Field Artillery are overrepresented relative to a typical civilian university program — and VMI's OML competitors often carry extensive summer credentials from Air Assault, Airborne, and CTLT. Stonewall Jackson taught here, George Marshall attended here, and Patton's father graduated here; the weight of that history is felt in how cadets are trained and how the Army views the institution. Lexington, Virginia is genuinely remote, which either reads as focused or isolated depending on what you want from a college experience.
