About This Program

The Tar Heel Navy Battalion is part of the North Carolina Piedmont Region Consortium, shared with Duke University and NC State — one of the premier consortium arrangements in NROTC. UNC-Chapel Hill midshipmen commission alongside Duke and NC State counterparts under a single commanding officer, with rotating personnel and shared events creating a competitive inter-school culture. Marine Option candidates benefit from proximity to Camp Lejeune, the largest Marine Corps base on the East Coast, enabling realistic field training exposure that units farther from the fleet cannot match. The combined consortium commissioning class is significant in size, producing officers across SWO, submarine, aviation, and Marine designators annually. Chapel Hill's liberal arts strength means a high representation of political science and pre-law midshipmen alongside engineering tracks.
