About This Program

Det 590 at UNC Chapel Hill has earned the best small detachment in the Southeast designation in multiple evaluation cycles and brings an unusual academic culture to the AFROTC mission — the Research Triangle produces some of the most intellectually credentialed cadets in the program, and the wing leverages that. Cross-enrollment with Duke and NC State creates a tri-university community that is larger than any single institution's program. Pope Army Airfield at Fort Liberty (formerly Bragg), home of the 43rd Airlift Wing, is 60 miles west — airlift and special operations aviation culture are embedded in the regional military community. Medical school pipelines from UNC's health sciences school create consistent medical service career field candidates. The small-cohort culture means cadets build lasting peer relationships.
