The Longhorn Battalion was established in 1940 and operates as a focused midshipman community inside one of the largest public universities in the country. The unit maintains dedicated submarine and aviation contacts on staff, and both pipelines are active in each commissioning class. Marine option midshipmen at UT Austin attend Fleet Marine Force month at Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejeune, receiving a full month of exposure to the Marine Air Ground Task Force before their junior-year OCS attempt. Austin's technology sector produces midshipmen who trend toward technical warfare communities, and the submarine pipeline benefits from UT's STEM depth. NAS Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth is within driving range for periodic aviation familiarization. The unit commissions approximately 30 officers annually across all warfare communities.
