About This Program

Syracuse University's Army ROTC program operates uniquely close to Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, and the battalion has leveraged that proximity in documented and deliberate ways: senior cadets have substituted Fort Drum training with the 10th Mountain Division for the standard Advanced Camp experience, and the Brig. Gen. who serves as the 10th Mountain's Deputy Commanding General has presided over Syracuse commissioning ceremonies. Cadets have also completed internships at Fort Drum in cultural property protection and other programs established at the Division's encouragement. The 10th Mountain Division's specialization in light infantry and mountain warfare creates a cultural environment around Syracuse ROTC that naturally influences branch interest and career expectations. Newhouse School of Communications and Maxwell School of Public Affairs draw cadets with communication and policy skills. The program maintains an active Hall of Fame and strong alumni network. For cadets considering light infantry and airborne assignments, no program in the Northeast has a closer relationship with an active division headquarters.
