About This Program

South Carolina's Gamecock Battalion won the MacArthur Award in 2023, distinguishing itself by achieving nearly double its commissioning mission — the metric that pushed it above 38 other programs in the 4th Brigade and above all programs nationally that year. The program's defining geographic asset is its location miles from Fort Jackson, the Army's largest training base and home of the Infantry School of the Signal Corps and multiple other schoolhouses; cadets train on state-of-the-art ranges and FTX areas that programs without a nearby installation simply cannot replicate. The battalion serves 200+ cadets across seven campuses, which makes it a true region-wide program and expands the scholarship footprint. The USC-SOCOM relationship in Columbia gives cadets informal exposure to special operations culture and mentorship that is genuinely unusual at the ROTC level. Branch selection at USC trends toward Signal and MI given Fort Jackson's institutional culture, though combat arms officers come out in strong numbers. The Fort Jackson pipeline also means cadets see their commissioning environment during training — they know exactly where they might return as second lieutenants.
