About This Program

San Diego State's Aztec Battalion operates in one of the most military-dense metropolitan areas in the country — San Diego hosts Naval Station San Diego, MCAS Miramar, Camp Pendleton, and multiple other installations — and while these are primarily Navy, Marine, and Air Force facilities, the joint culture and military-family population in the region creates a cadet corps with above-average prior military exposure. The Aztec Battalion draws from SDSU's large and diverse student body and commissions into Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard components. San Diego's proximity to Camp Pendleton means some cross-service training events are accessible, and cadets benefit from a metropolitan area where military service is normalized and respected. The program serves the greater San Diego area and recruits from both the urban center and surrounding communities with significant military family populations. Commissioning ceremonies have drawn high-profile speakers, including a NATO leader who gave the keynote address. The California Army National Guard pipeline is active for cadets seeking in-state assignments.
