About This Program

Rutgers' Scarlet Knight Battalion is one of the oldest ROTC programs in the country, established in 1916 and commissioning officers through every major American conflict since — including Medal of Honor recipient Col. Jack Jacobs, whose name is now attached to the battalion's alumni events. The program's honest challenge is the Northeast environment: recruiting in New Jersey is harder than in Southern or Midwestern states with stronger military cultures, and historically the battalion has competed against programs from the South and military colleges with a structural disadvantage in quantity metrics. That challenge has shaped a cadre culture that is attentive, student-focused, and invested in individual cadet development in a way that larger programs sometimes are not. The battalion draws cross-enrollment from multiple New Jersey campuses. Being in the New York metro area means cadets with finance, logistics, or MI interests have unusual networking access through Rutgers' alumni base. The program commissions into the New Jersey Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division and 50th Infantry Brigade at meaningful rates, offering cadets a viable in-state Guard pathway.
