About This Program

Det 485 at Rutgers is one of the largest Northeast AFROTC programs, drawing from a massive state university population in the dense New Jersey-New York corridor. McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst — the Air Force's only joint base with an Army and Navy installation, home of the 87th Air Base Wing and C-17 Globemaster airlift operations — is 30 miles south, providing airlift community culture access and career field exposure. The program benefits from New Jersey's large military family population, producing cadets who arrive with baseline familiarity with Air Force culture. STEM programs at Rutgers in computer science, electrical engineering, and chemistry create cyber, research, and medical career field pipelines. The cadet corps reflects New Jersey's demographic diversity — one of the more culturally representative AFROTC wings in the Northeast.
