About This Program

Penn State's Nittany Lion Battalion is the largest traditional (non-SMC) Army ROTC program in the country — a scale that creates both opportunity and challenge for cadets who want to stand out. The program is explicitly cadet-run: senior MS-IV cadets organize and execute training while officers supervise, which means leadership repetitions come early but quality can vary by cadet cycle. Penn State sends two Ranger Challenge teams — primary and alternate — to the 2nd Brigade competition annually, and competes at the prestigious West Point Sandhurst competition in the spring. The most common majors among cadets skew toward criminal justice and engineering, and branch selection reflects that diversity: Intelligence, Military Police, Signal, and Engineers appear alongside combat arms slots. Scholarship competition is real at Penn State's scale — more cadets competing for the same national slots means strong PT scores and academics are required from day one, not just at OML time. The university's alumni network in Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic is a genuine career asset for officers who transition to the civilian sector, and the Penn State brand opens doors that smaller program alumni often lack.
