About This Program

Oregon State earned the nickname "West Point of the West" during World War II for commissioning more officers than any other non-military academy in the nation — over 2,000 men trained at OSU while roughly 9,000 graduates served in the conflict. That heritage is real and the program actively cultivates it, with the Beaver Battalion offering all three ROTC branches on campus (Army, Navy, and Air Force). OSU's founding in 1872 as a land-grant institution with mandatory military science training means the ROTC culture is deeply embedded in institutional identity in ways that newer programs cannot claim. The program serves satellite cadets from Western Oregon University and OSU Cascades, expanding its geographic reach. Corvallis is not adjacent to major installations, but the Pacific Northwest's training areas and JBLM are accessible for major exercises. The program has recently produced commissioning classes with cadets highlighting themes of mission commitment and perseverance, consistent with the historical culture. Branch selection follows national OML patterns and the Oregon National Guard pipeline is active.
