About This Program

Det 685 at Oregon State — the Flying Beavs — is a Pacific Northwest program drawing from OSU's strong engineering, computer science, and environmental science schools. Cross-enrollment with the University of Oregon and area community colleges expands the cadet base. Klamath Falls ANGB and Portland Air National Guard Base sit within the state, and the proximity to Joint Base Lewis-McChord (C-17 airlift, Army) provides joint-force exposure. The Pacific Northwest's defense aerospace sector — Boeing's Everett facility, numerous aerospace suppliers — provides an acquisitions and engineering career field awareness. The program is smaller than flagship programs, which produces a close-knit culture where peer mentorship is strong and cadre-cadet relationships are substantive.
