Det 670 at Oklahoma State carries the Student First, Cadet Always philosophy that explicitly distinguishes it from more rigid programs — the detachment encourages cadets to engage campus culture, participate in clubs, and build a full undergraduate life while maintaining ROTC obligations. Vance AFB in Enid is 60 miles northwest, one of only four undergraduate pilot training bases in the Air Force (71st Flying Training Wing), providing among the most direct pilot training community access of any detachment in the country. Altus AFB, where airlift and tanker crews are trained, is 90 miles southwest. OSU's engineering and aviation sciences programs feed naturally into rated and acquisitions career fields. The detachment is recognized as Oklahoma's number one Air Force ROTC program, a distinction that carries competitive meaning in a state with multiple Air Force installations.
