About This Program

Ohio University's Bobcat Battalion won the prestigious MacArthur Award in 2017, placing it among the top eight ROTC programs out of 275 nationwide — an achievement that reflects consistent performance in OML rankings, cadet retention, and commissioning mission accomplishment. Located in Athens, a classic Appalachian Ohio college town, the program has produced Distinguished Military Graduates at above-average rates and reports that a large percentage of every senior commissioning class earns DMG recognition. The cadre brings nearly 200 combined years of experience across training, recruiting, and operations, and the battalion has deliberately cultivated a culture of mentorship where cadre and senior cadets invest heavily in junior development. Ohio's rural setting means PT is taken seriously and the program draws cadets who tend to commit early. Branch selection reflects national averages with active and reserve component options well-represented. The program has a strong alumni network through the Bobcat Battalion endowment and scholarship fund.
