Ohio State's Buckeye Battalion won the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award as the top program in 7th Brigade in 2018 — a competition among 38 schools judged on commissioning achievement, OML performance, and cadet retention. The program holds a historical affiliation with the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps, established for programs with a strong record of producing technical and logistics officers, though cadets commission across all 16 branches. Ranger Challenge teams have placed in the top three of 7th Brigade's competition four times in recent years, winning outright twice, reflecting genuine physical standards and team discipline. The scale of Ohio State (60,000+ students) means ROTC is a self-selected intense community within a much larger campus, and cadets who want standout leadership positions have significant opportunities given the university's research and defense-contractor internship ecosystem. Engineering, computer science, and STEM majors dominate the commissioning class, and branch selection reflects that — Ordnance, Signal, Cyber, and Engineers are well-represented alongside Infantry and Armor. The program actively participates in CTLT and summer training placements to build OML-padding credentials for top cadets.
