About This Program

Northwestern was one of the original six NROTC units established by the Navy in 1926 and has maintained a continuous program since. The Evanston campus sits on Lake Michigan, providing a genuinely maritime geographic context that few landlocked Midwestern programs can claim. The unit is small and selective; Northwestern's competitive academic culture means midshipmen are among the most academically accomplished in the NROTC system and are disproportionately competitive for technical warfare communities. Naval science courses at Northwestern carry academic credit and are integrated into the university's curriculum more formally than at many programs. Service selection at Northwestern spans the full warfare spectrum. Naval Station Great Lakes is 30 miles north, offering periodic fleet exposure. The unit's small size is a consistent theme — close mentorship and a genuinely tight-knit midshipman community are what graduates most consistently describe.
