University of North Georgia is Georgia's official Military College. Georgia residents who contract with Army ROTC may qualify to stack the state-funded Georgia Military Scholarship on top of a federal ROTC award. Some cadets achieve full cost-of-attendance coverage through combined state and federal scholarships — ask UNG's scholarship coordinator about your specific eligibility.
UNG's designation as Georgia's military college means the state legislature actively funds the corps program and maintains ROTC as an institutional priority — not a budget line item that can be cut. This structural commitment produces consistent cadre quality and program stability across administrations.
The University of North Georgia at Dahlonega is The Military College of Georgia and one of six federally designated Senior Military Colleges — a designation that grants cadets a guaranteed active duty commission slot that traditional ROTC programs cannot offer. UNG punches well above its size: for the 2025-26 academic year, UNG produced the No. 1 overall Army ROTC cadet nationally out of 5,538 graduates and the No. 1 National Guard commissioning cadet nationally, placing three cadets in the top 100 overall. The program has a notably high rate of National Guard commissioning, reflecting Georgia's strong Guard culture and the in-state tuition advantage; the UNG ROTC Grant through the Georgia Student Finance Commission layers state-level funding on top of Army scholarships, making the financial package genuinely competitive. Dahlonega sits in the North Georgia mountains — land navigation and field training happen on real terrain, not flat parade grounds. Camp Frank D. Merrill, home of Ranger School's mountain phase, is practically in the backyard. If you want an SMC environment at public school cost and are open to a Guard commission, UNG has one of the most compelling value propositions of any Senior Military College.
