About This Program

North Carolina Central University's Army ROTC cadets train under the Bull City Battalion, a joint program shared with Duke University that has formally cross-enrolled NCCU students since 1995 — making it one of the few ROTC programs in the country where an HBCU and an Ivy-peer institution train side by side under the same cadre. The contrast is deliberate and pedagogically valuable: NCCU cadets bring a different professional and cultural context into the same leadership labs as Duke students, and the officer corps has consistently valued the outcome. Durham's position in the Research Triangle puts cadets 90 miles from Fort Liberty, the state's largest employer, and within reach of a federal contractor community that absorbs Signal, Intelligence, and Cyber-branched officers at significant rates post-service. NCCU's law school is one of the HBCU network's strongest, and the intersection of JAG pipeline candidates with ROTC training produces a small but influential cohort of Army lawyers who tend to do well in positions requiring institutional credibility. The Bull City Battalion faced a potential Army-imposed relocation in late 2025 that drew direct Congressional intervention from Representative Valerie Foushee — a signal of how politically protected this HBCU-Duke partnership has become and how seriously the community takes the program's continuation. For NCCU students, the dual-campus training structure demands commuting to Duke for certain drills, but the professional payoff in cross-institutional network-building is real and measurable.
