Det 450 at Montana State is the only AFROTC detachment in the state of Montana and sits 85 miles from Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls — headquarters of the 341st Missile Wing, which operates 150 Minuteman III ICBMs across Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado, and is currently converting to the new Sentinel ICBM system. For cadets interested in the nuclear deterrence mission, missile operations, and Space Force's growing role in space-based nuclear command and control, Malmstrom's community is the most accessible in the AFROTC system from this location. The program is small, which means a tightly bonded cadre-to-cadet development relationship. Bozeman's outdoor culture — skiing, climbing, wilderness — produces cadets with physical durability and mental self-sufficiency that field training selectors notice.
