Got a wild idea? We build for service members — not the brass, not shareholders. If it's good, it ships.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy operates the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program (SSMP), a specialized NROTC track that differs from standard Navy ROTC in a critical way: upon graduation, SSMP midshipmen who earn a Coast Guard-issued merchant mariner license can commission directly as Strategic Sealift Officers in the Navy Reserve — a path that produces licensed merchant mariners with naval officer credentials simultaneously. MMA is one of only seven maritime schools in the country authorized to run this program. Training schedule mirrors standard NROTC with Monday leadership labs and Wednesday/Friday physical training, but the academic program overlays maritime engineering and seamanship coursework. The Buzzards Bay waterfront location means seamanship is practical, not theoretical. SSMP graduates serve the nation's sealift capacity — the logistics backbone of any major maritime operation — in a role that receives little public attention but enormous operational significance.
