Got a wild idea? We build for service members — not the brass, not shareholders. If it's good, it ships.

Maine Maritime Academy's NROTC program, established in 1972, is part of a joint unit with the University of Maine at Orono — two institutions with very different cultures brought together under a single naval science program. MMA is technically a maritime school, meaning midshipmen here have the option of pursuing both a NROTC commission and a Coast Guard merchant marine license through the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program. The program's proximity to Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, creates real submarine community exposure; in 2025, midshipmen attended the commissioning of USS Iowa (SSN-797). Service selection covers the full spectrum: surface warfare, submarine, aviation, special warfare, and Marine Corps. The Castine, Maine location provides a genuinely maritime training environment — sailing and seamanship are integrated into the academic and military experience in ways urban programs cannot replicate. The unit culture is serious and mission-focused.
