Det 310 at LSU is defined by its neighbor: Barksdale AFB in Bossier City is 65 miles northwest and home of the 2nd Bomb Wing — the Air Force's frontline B-52H Stratofortress wing and a major Global Strike Command headquarters. For cadets who want to end up in the bomber community, LSU's geographic relationship with Barksdale is without parallel in AFROTC. The B-52 Formal Training Unit operates there, and the air and space power culture of Barksdale permeates the detachment's operational identity. Louisiana's military culture is deep and the Southern work ethic translates into a detachment that competes physically and academically. The rated board here naturally produces cadets oriented toward the Global Strike mission, though Space Force and cyber pipelines from LSU's engineering school are also growing.
