About This Program

Det 280 at the University of Kansas — the Flying Jayhawks — sits 30 miles from McConnell AFB in Wichita, home of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing (KC-46 Pegasus) and one of the Air Force's primary tanker bases. Cadets interested in air refueling and the aerial refueling mission have among the most accessible community visit opportunities of any program in AFROTC. The KC-46 represents the Air Force's next-generation tanker, and exposure to that program's operational culture while in college is a genuine career planning advantage. The detachment draws from over a dozen cross-town schools including Washburn, Baker, Ottawa, and Benedictine, creating a larger corps than the university enrollment alone would suggest. Kansas's military-friendly culture and the wheat-belt work ethic shape the detachment's character.
