About This Program

JMU's Duke Battalion is one of the most decorated Ranger Challenge programs in the country, having won first place in Brigade Ranger Challenge competition in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2007, 2013, 2019, and 2022 — a level of dominance that reflects embedded institutional culture, not sporadic performance. The program is consistently ranked in the top 5 percent of over 270 ROTC programs nationally, and at the 2023 Army Ten-Miler, JMU sent more cadets than any other program in the country. The Duke Battalion was established independently in 1979 after years as a partner detachment of UVA, and has since developed a distinct culture around physical rigor and tactical excellence. The Shenandoah Valley location gives cadets access to mountain terrain for FTX events that programs in the flatlands cannot replicate. JMU also won the MacArthur Award in 1992, 1998, 2004, and 2010. Cadets who want a high-standard program that takes competition seriously — Ranger Challenge, PT, OML — and is willing to fight for top branch picks against larger programs should look carefully at JMU.
