About This Program

The University of Iowa's NROTC access is through a crosstown arrangement — Iowa City does not host a standalone Naval ROTC unit. University of Iowa students interested in a Navy or Marine commission may access the Iowa State University NROTC program (Cyclone Battalion, located in Ames, approximately 120 miles away) or pursue a national scholarship and transfer to a school with an established unit. Iowa State's NROTC program is the primary NROTC presence in the state of Iowa. Students from Iowa City who are genuinely committed to naval commissioning navigate this geographic challenge as a first test of their motivation and commitment to serve. The University of Iowa's hospitals and health sciences programs have historically produced officers for the Navy Medical Service Corps when those graduates access commissioning through affiliated programs.
