About This Program

George Mason's Patriot Battalion was established in 1982 and achieved independent status in 2000; what sets it apart is its location in Fairfax, Virginia — inside the National Capital Region, 10 miles from the Pentagon. That proximity has tangible career consequences: the program runs an Intelligence Community Scholar program that prepares cadets for careers in the IC, and the ability to network informally with defense policy, intelligence, and cyber professionals is unmatched by any other ROTC program outside of the immediate DC area. The battalion trains jointly with Maryland, Virginia, and DC programs, giving cadets broader peer networks than single-campus programs develop. In recent years the number of incoming freshmen pursuing commissions has grown ninefold, and Cadet Bryan Vega was recognized as the premier ROTC cadet in the nation — evidence that the program's upward trajectory is real. Branch selection at Mason trends toward MI, Cyber, and Signal, which makes sense given the talent pool Mason attracts in Northern Virginia. The program cross-enrolls cadets from Marymount University, University of Mary Washington, and NOVA Community College. Cadets with national security or intelligence career ambitions should treat this program as a top-tier option.
