About This Program

Florida State University is part of the Tallahassee NROTC consortium that also serves Florida A&M University, one of the nation's flagship HBCUs — creating a joint battalion that is among the most racially diverse in the NROTC system. The unit was established in 1972 and operates out of the FAMU campus. FAMU's Rattler Battalion has commissioned hundreds of Navy and Marine Corps officers across its history. Tallahassee's distance from the fleet is a reality, but NAS Pensacola — the cradle of naval aviation — is within two hours, offering periodic aviation familiarization that other landlocked programs lack. FSU's strong criminology, political science, and business programs feed information warfare, intelligence, and SWO pipelines. The joint FSU-FAMU structure requires intentional coordination and creates an unusually mission-driven unit culture as a result.
