Corps Housing Built Into the Experience

Every Citadel student lives in the corps barracks — there is no off-campus alternative. ROTC is not an add-on activity here; it is the institutional default. For scholarship cadets, this means a service-academy-style living environment at a fraction of peer private university costs.

Service Academy Commissioning Pipeline

The Citadel's faculty, physical standards, and academic culture are calibrated to produce commissioned officers. The institution has maintained a ROTC commissioning pipeline for over 100 years. Senior military leadership from all branches actively recruits and mentors Citadel cadets.

About This Program

The Citadel's Palmetto Battalion is the second-largest Army ROTC program in the nation by headcount, commissioning over 110 cadets annually from The Citadel, College of Charleston, and Charleston Southern University. The Citadel is a Senior Military College where every student lives as a cadet — there is no separating ROTC from daily life — which produces a level of military bearing and peer-standard enforcement that traditional university programs cannot match. The CAIT pipeline regularly places cadets into Airborne, Air Assault, and Mountain Warfare schools, padding OML scores heading into branch selection. Scholarship competition is meaningful: Citadel cadets often receive Army ROTC four-year scholarships supplemented by institutional financial aid, and the combination can make out-of-state cost competitive with public in-state alternatives. Alumni networks in the Southeast military community are extremely dense — the Citadel ring is recognized across Fort Stewart, Fort Moore, and Shaw AFB. The 4-year immersive environment is not for everyone; culture is traditional, standards are high, and the absence of a civilian counterculture on campus is by design.
