About This Program

Cal Poly SLO's Fighting Mustang Battalion has one of the more dramatic recent histories in ROTC: in 2025 the U.S. Army announced plans to eliminate the program as part of a Department of Defense civilian workforce reduction, community and congressional pushback reversed the decision, and cadets then went on to post the highest combined performance average among all 32 Western ROTC programs at Advanced Camp 2025 — producing four Distinguished Military Graduates out of six commissioning cadets, and winning the Top Female Army Fitness Award. The program currently operates as an extension of UC Santa Barbara's host battalion while retaining its presence on the SLO campus. Cal Poly's "learn by doing" engineering culture produces cadets who are technically proficient and physically strong, with recent graduates commissioning into fields including computer engineering and construction management. The program has commissioned over 1,400 officers since the 1950s. Cal Poly's quarter system and technical curriculum create challenging time management demands for cadets, which cadre say self-selects for highly motivated individuals.
