Definition
Service stripes on the dress uniform. Each one represents years of service. When someone has so many hash marks they reach their elbow, they've been in long enough to remember when things were different (worse, they'll say).
Example Usage
"He's got six hash marks. That man has been in the military longer than I've been alive."
