Pharmacist's Mate
PhMDoc
Served: 1917–1948
Enlisted medical caregivers who ran sick bay, assisted surgeons, and went ashore with Marines under fire — five Medals of Honor went to Pharmacist's Mates in WWII alone.
The Story
The 1948 rating badge change swapped the Geneva Convention-protected red cross — worn for 50 years — for a winged caduceus that was never actually the symbol of medicine (it's Hermes' staff — the staff of *commerce*). The Hospital Corps has worn the wrong god's symbol for 78 years and counting.
Epitaph
“Killed at the peak of its prestige. Buried under the wrong god's symbol.”
