Marine Raiders (Original WWII Battalions)
Edson's Raiders / Carlson's Raiders
Served: 1942–1944
Commando-style light infantry for amphibious raids — Makin Island, Tulagi, Edson's Ridge, New Georgia.
The Story
Carlson's 2nd Raider Battalion adopted "Gung Ho" (from Chinese *gōnghé*, "work together") as its motto after Carlson borrowed it from Chinese Communist guerrillas he'd observed in the 1930s. The slang entered American English from this battalion. MARSOC revived the *name* in 2014 — different unit.
Epitaph
“Coined "Gung Ho." Got killed by the Corps that quoted them.”
