Coast Guard Core Values

The Text — Word for Word

Honor — Integrity is our standard. We demonstrate uncompromising ethical conduct and moral behavior in all of our personal and organizational actions. Respect — We value our diverse workforce. We treat each other and those we serve with fairness, dignity, respect, and compassion. Devotion to Duty — We are professionals, military and civilian, who seek responsibility, accept accountability, and are committed to the successful achievement of our organizational goals.

What it actually means

Honor, Respect, Devotion to Duty. The Coast Guard chose a different third value than the sea services it works alongside — "Devotion to Duty" instead of "Commitment" — and it fits a service whose mission is often walking into the storm to pull someone out of it. These three are printed, briefed, and lived at every unit.

Where it came from

Adopted as the Coast Guard’s three core values and reinforced through recruit training at Cape May and throughout a Coast Guardsman’s career.
