Cross-Country Comparison

Officer Age Limits by Country

When are you too old to commission? Every country sets hard ceilings on officer entry — but the ceilings vary wildly by pathway. Service academy: typically 22–23. Officer candidate school: usually late twenties to early thirties. Direct commission for doctors, lawyers, and chaplains: as high as the late 40s in several allies. And the famous Foreign Legion ceiling: 39 years, 6 months.
