DUTY STATION COMPARISON

MCAS Iwakuni vs Naval Station Great Lakes

Marines vs Navy, IL

The Intel

MCAS Iwakuni: "Japan Duty: The Enlistment's Apology Tour." Naval Station Great Lakes: "Where America's Sailors Are Forged (and Frostbitten)." Different uniforms, different installations, same dawning truth: wherever you are, someone from the other branch is convinced they have it harder.

Weather: MCAS Iwakuni serves Mild four seasons, hot humid summers, rainy season. Naval Station Great Lakes counters with Cold harsh winters, warm humid summers, lake effect. Your uniform was designed for approximately neither. Both sit in that frustrating middle ground — not saving, not hemorrhaging, just existing in budget purgatory with a commissary discount. Mission-wise: MCAS Iwakuni is about 1st MAW forward and F-35B. Naval Station Great Lakes is about Navy boot camp and Only Navy basic training location. The lifestyle around those missions is where these two truly diverge. Off-post: MCAS Iwakuni puts you near Iwakuni, Japan (5 min). Naval Station Great Lakes puts you near North Chicago, IL (5 min). That difference compounds over a 2–3 year tour.

One base you'll miss for what it gave you. The other you'll miss for what it cost you. Both leave marks the DD-214 doesn't mention.

Naval Station Great Lakes

Naval Station Great Lakes is the Navy's single enlisted boot camp — every Navy sailor who enlists comes through Recruit Training Command (RTC) here. Roughly 40,000 recruits per year pass through the 8-week pipeline; the famous USS Recruit (the landlocked training ship named after various 'USS' hulls and currently styled as USS Trayer for the Battle Stations 21 capstone) is on-base. Beyond RTC, Great Lakes is also the principal entry point for Navy A-school training: the Center for Surface Combat Systems trains rates including GSM, EM, IC, ET, FC, MR, OS, and the surface-warfare technical pipeline; Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) headquarters runs RTC, Officer Training Command Newport, NJROTC, and NROTC; the Surface Warfare Officers School Engineering Learning Site supports SWO accession-pipeline engineering courses. Recruits do not draw BAH (they live in RTC barracks). Permanent-party sailors — RTC company commanders (the 'RDCs'), A-school instructors, command staff, and the medical/dental/admin sustainment overlay — and their families are the BAH-drawing population, plus the substantial DON civilian and contractor workforce supporting NSTC and CNATT North Chicago. For RDC orders: the duty is structurally demanding. RDCs run a 21-month tour, work 18+ hour days during training cycles, and the assignment is a well-documented career-defining grind. For A-school instructor billets and command staff: the tempo is more humane and the assignment is highly desirable for Lake County, IL quality of life. Career signal: Navy Recruit Division Commander duty (Special Recognition tag for the RDC qualification) is a recognized advancement-board positive for senior enlisted, but the tour is brutal. The honest local picture: BAH for MHA IL092 (Great Lakes NAVTRACEN, IL — Lake County) — E-5 with deps is $2,427, E-7 with deps $2,853, O-3 with deps $3,018, O-4 with deps $3,381 — against Lake County 3BR rents of $1,400-$2,200 in Gurnee/Waukegan and $2,000-$3,000 in Libertyville/Lake Forest. BAH is workable in the mid-Lake-County towns and tight in the North Shore suburbs. Illinois is a flat 4.95% income tax state with high property taxes (Lake County effective rate ~2.6%) and 6.25% state sales tax. The structural Chicago metropolitan amenity — world-class food, Metra commuter rail access into the city in 45-60 min, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Lake Michigan shoreline — is the upside. The winters are genuinely brutal: lake-effect snow, wind chills regularly -20°F or colder December-February.

HOUSING

On-base family housing (Forrestal Village / Inverness / Equality Court, Hunt Military Communities) is structurally limited and waitlisted. Most permanent party live off-base. Off-base options: Waukegan (immediately west, Waukegan SD60 — mid-tier urban-Illinois, lowest cost, the affordability play but the schools rate lower); Gurnee (10 min west, Woodland D50 K-8 + Warren Township HS — mid-to-upper-tier, Six Flags adjacent, family-suburban) is the consensus military-family pick; Libertyville (15 min west, Libertyville SD70 + Libertyville HS — top-tier IL district) is the school-upgrade move; Lake Forest (15 min south, Lake Forest SD67 + Lake Forest HS — top-tier IL district, structurally one of Illinois' wealthiest towns) is the premium move; Lake Bluff and Highwood are quieter shoreline options. Lake County property tax burden (effective ~2.6%) is the structural cost.

SCHOOLS

Lake County, Illinois school districts span the spectrum. Waukegan SD60 rates lower-tier on Illinois Report Card metrics — most military families filter Waukegan out of the housing search. Gurnee (Woodland D50 + Warren Township HS), Libertyville (SD70 + Libertyville HS), Stevenson HS (Lincolnshire — among the best public high schools in Illinois), Lake Forest HS, and Mundelein HS rate strong. No DoDEA. Lake Forest Academy, Woodlands Academy, and the Chicago-area private school options (Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Stevenson if redistricting) are deep but tuition runs $20K-$45K.

COMMAND CLIMATE

RTC operational tempo is structurally brutal during training cycles — RDCs and the CDR/XO/CMC chain run 18+ hour days on the recruit company schedule. A-school commands (CSCS, IWTC, CNATT North Chicago) run more humane M-F schoolhouse hours. Naval Service Training Command headquarters and the supporting civilian workforce run normal weekday cadence. The structural divide: RDC duty is the grinder; everything else at Great Lakes is comparatively benign duty.

BOTTOM LINE

The Navy's single enlisted boot camp and the principal Navy A-school surface-warfare training pipeline. Career signal for RDC-track senior enlisted is real but the tour is structurally brutal. A-school instructor billets are quality-of-life duty. Lake County family lifestyle is genuinely good in the Gurnee/Libertyville/Lake Forest corridor, with Chicago weekend access via Metra. The trades are Illinois' tax stack (high property taxes, 4.95% flat income tax, 6.25% sales tax) and the structural Lake Michigan winters — December-March is genuinely cold and gray.

  • RDC-TRACK SENIOR ENLISTED (POST-TOUR)

Recruit Division Commander duty is a 21-month grind, but it is a recognized advancement-board positive and structurally career-defining for E-5 through E-7 sailors who survive the tour. Senior enlisted who complete the RDC qualification and roll back to the fleet carry the Special Recognition signal forward.

  • NAVY A-SCHOOL INSTRUCTORS

Center for Surface Combat Systems instructor billets in GSM, EM, ET, FC, IC, OS, and the engineering/combat-systems pipeline are structurally great quality-of-life duty — predictable schedule, Lake County family lifestyle, and direct mentorship of sailors entering the fleet pipeline. Master Training Specialist (MTS) and Master Training Instructor designations earn here.

  • NORTH SHORE / CHICAGO-COMMUTER FAMILIES

Lake Forest, Libertyville, and Lake Bluff are upscale North Shore suburbs with top-tier Illinois school districts (Stevenson HS, Libertyville HS, Lake Forest HS). Metra Union Pacific North Line runs from Great Lakes station into Chicago Ogilvie in 60-70 min — weekend Chicago culture (deep-dish, Cubs/Bears/Bulls, Lyric Opera, Art Institute) is structurally accessible.

  • DUAL-CAREER HEALTHCARE / PHARMA SPOUSES

Lake County has the structural pharma corridor — AbbVie (North Chicago HQ, immediately adjacent to base), Takeda (Deerfield), Horizon Therapeutics, Abbott (Abbott Park), and the broader Chicago healthcare market. Lovell FHCC and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital are major employers. Dual-income families find structural professional opportunity.
