DUTY STATION COMPARISON

MCAS Cherry Point vs MCAS Yuma

Marines, NC vs Marines, AZ

The Intel

MCAS Cherry Point: "Where Marine Aviation Goes to Be Forgotten." MCAS Yuma: "355 Days of Sunshine, 10 Days of Regret." Two duty stations where the real competition isn't the enemy — it's whoever got the better assignment.

Climate duel: Hot & humid summers, mild winters, hurricane risk at MCAS Cherry Point versus Extreme desert — one of the hottest cities in the US at MCAS Yuma. Your body will file a formal complaint at either location — the paperwork just varies by season. Cost of living at both: low. If you can't build savings at either of these, the zip code isn't the problem. Mission-wise: MCAS Cherry Point is about 2nd MAW and AV-8B Harrier. MCAS Yuma is about WTI (Weapons and Tactics Instructor course) and AV-8B Harriers. The lifestyle around those missions is where these two truly diverge. Off-post: MCAS Cherry Point puts you near Havelock, NC (5 min). MCAS Yuma puts you near Yuma, AZ (5 min). That difference compounds over a 2–3 year tour.

One builds retention. The other builds character. The Marines needs both. It funds neither adequately.
