Off-base, Mountain Home proper (5-10 min) is closest and cheapest — adequate but limited; the off-base inventory is older single-family stock and a few apartment complexes. Boise (60 min northwest on I-84) is the alternate move for families who want suburban amenities and better schools — but the daily commute is real (especially in winter ice conditions and the 'inversion' fog season). Most career-focused families pick on-base or Mountain Home town for the commute math; some O-grades and dual-income families do the Boise commute and accept the trade.
Mountain Home School District 193 is small but the district has Purple Star recognition and a real military-family liaison. Mountain Home HS is the main public option — adequate, not standout. Bennett Mountain HS is the alternative HS. F-15E mission demand is steady and the range complex means training currency is structurally easier to maintain than at airspace-constrained bases. The Idaho isolation builds a tight wing social culture — Mountain Home is small enough that the base is the community.
